The modern academic world is quite hectic, and students are exposed to much pressure to perform, multitask and be performative with their work. This causes them to resort to solutions of shortcuts, i.e. sometimes copy pasting assignments, paying someone to do their coursework, hoping that it will help them to be able to keep off the sinking ship. Although these strategies can be used to provide temporary relief, the fact still remains that students are not receiving the support, tools and the mindset that they require to achieve long-term success. What they cannot afford is instead an epistemological shift- a shift in the direction of learning by cheating, or rather learning by getting its real meaning, learning by mastering.
Why the Shortcut Mentality is Gaining Popularity
The Pressure to Perform
Grades are usually considered to be the final measure of accomplishments. This has developed a culture of competition in the student body that they have to be the best at all times. Most of them are stressed as they work part-time, take care of their families and deal with heavy course loads. In this kind of situation, one can become tempted by the notion of somebody do my course for me. However, in these shortcuts, students lose the opportunity to develop abilities of critical thinking, problem-solving, and management of time management, which educational sponsors should develop.
Instant Gratification Over Long-Term Skills
A student who is brought up in the current technology-infested and instantly gratified world finds it hard to do anything that takes time. Got a question? Google it. Want something done? Have it sent to you in minutes. This mentality translates into school where learning has become about trying to get things over, to get them done rather than learning. Each student has his/her way of learning. Some individuals learn math by being visually competent, and some learn through their practical experiences. The standardized schooling setup cannot accommodate such variety. Education systems should promote learning for the sake of curiosity rather than just grades. Breaking into the classroom with real-world applications makes students understand the worth of what they are imbibing. As an example, students might be asked to make a project budget or review trends in data instead of working on an abstract math problem. Relevance in education means that learning is more likely to engage the students as they take ownership of the process.

Traditional testing methods often focus on rote memorization and do little to assess a student’s true understanding. Students should be made to realize that intelligence is not ingrained. When students are not able to conduct well on a topic, it does not imply that they are poor at it, but it simply implies that they have not yet learnt that subject. Instilling a growth mindset will make students keep up with the academic challenges and accept failures as an avenue of growth and not as a reason to quit.
Final Thoughts
There are shortcut solutions that seem to provide momentary repose at the expense of actual education. Students using them may be able to pass their exams, but they are being denied the skills they will be using to make them successful outside of school. I wrote the article because the truth is that students, especially those who need it most, just need a little help through supportive systems, custom instruction, psychological support, and reprioritization of education values-performance to progress.
This mindset is the area that is the responsibility of the educators, institutions, parents and peers themselves. We should finally stop asking, How can I do this and get it done fast; We should instead say How can I learn this. It is only through this that we will be able to ready students not only to pass exams, but also to be ready for life.
